2D hydrodynamic model of water levels and surges (France)

To model water levels (including astronomical tides and meteorological surges), the Shom uses a barotropic (2D) version of the HYCOM code (https://hycom.org/) configured on 2 domains: Atlantic and Mediterranean. The configurations have been parameterised with fine bathymetry and a curvilinear grid with variable resolution ranging from 2km offshore to 500m at the coast. These models have been adapted by the Shom to model coastal areas by taking into account, in particular, the tide and high-resolution bathymetry in the coastal zone (from 100m for the façade DTMs to 20m for the coastal DTMs) using, in particular, Litto3D surveys by airborne LIDAR. The models are operated by Météo-France and the Shom within the framework of the Wave-Submersions vigilance.

Additional information The surge and water level forecasts available on data.shom.fr are updated once a day from the 00H00UTC run provided by the Météo-France calculator. They provide one day of analysis (D-1) and four days of forecasting (from D to D+3). The forcings used are as follows: Meteorology: Météo France Arpège model (EURAT0.1 grid) Oceanography (open boundaries) : Harmonic tidal components from Shom.
