    Validation level Research
Additional information At the national level, 96 research and monitoring sites were surveyed, subdivided as follows for the 3 maritime areas: Adriatic 34, Ionian-Central Mediterranean 18, Tyrrhenian-Western Mediterranean 44. The census was coordinated by CNR-ISMAR, benefited from the contribution of other CNR Institutes (i.e. CNR-IRBIM, CNR-IAS, CNR-INM), and involved, through the Italian Oceanographic Commission (COI), all the main Research Institutes and Universities operating on the sea (i.e. ISPRA, CONISMA, SZN, OGS, INGV, IIM, ENEA). The stations include both monitoring stations and research and experimentation sites, and collect numerous parameters including physical, chemical, biological/ecological and structural parameters. The types of instrumentation vary from simple stations with measurements of wave levels or current velocities, to more complex instrumentation consisting of buoys and multi-sensor observatories at different depths, up to full-fledged oceanographic platforms.
