Mediterranean Integrated Geographical Information System for Risk

Assessment and Pollution Control (MEDGIS-MAR), managed by the Regional

Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea

(REMPEC). The information on each recorded event in the database

includes the date and location of the spill or accident, the ship(s)

or facility(ies) involved, the source of information, the type and

quantity of pollutant, a brief description of the accident, and, when

available, actions taken and consequences of the accident. Since the 
            
100
majority of these accidents do not cause sea pollution or present any 
            
101
risk of marine pollution, the listed accidents are those that have 
            
102
actually caused pollution in the Mediterranean Sea by hydrocarbons or 
            
103
other harmful and potentially dangerous substances (HPDS), or have had 
            
104
the potential to do so. The accidents included in the database meet at 
            
105
least one of the following criteria:\r\n\r\n    Accident occurring in 
            
106
the Mediterranean Sea as defined by the Barcelona Convention.\r\n\r\n    
            
107
Accident involving any type of ship, which resulted in an actual spill 
            
108
of hydrocarbons, a spill or release of a harmful and potentially 
            
109
dangerous substance, or the loss or damage of a container holding one 
            
110
or more HPDS.\r\n\r\n    Land-based accidents (terminals, storage 
            
111
tanks, pipelines, industries, power plants, etc.) that led to the 
            
112
penetration of hydrocarbons or HPDS into the marine 
            
113
environment.\r\n\r\n    Accident involving one or more tankers or 
            
114
chemical tankers (loaded or not).\r\n\r\n    Certain types of 
            
115
accidents, such as collisions, groundings, or others causing serious 
            
116
damage to the ships involved, especially if these ships were 
            
117
transporting or could have transported significant quantities of 
            
118
bunker fuel.\r\n\r\n    All accidents involving the sinking of ships

with any amount of hydrocarbons on board.\r\n\r\n    All accidents
