Additional information The Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme (https://en.unesco.org/mab), launched in the early 1970s, is an intergovernmental programme created with the aim of establishing a scientific basis for improving the relationship between people and their environment. The MAB Programme promotes interdisciplinary research in the natural and social sciences and capacity building in natural resource management, in particular on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. In this way, MaB contributes not only to a better understanding of the environment, including global change, but also to a greater engagement of science and scientists in the development of policies related to the wise use of biological and cultural diversity. The International Secretariat of the MaB Programme is located at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, and its governing body is the International Coordinating Council (ICC), composed from time to time, on a rotating basis, of thirty-four States from among UNESCO's Member States. The Executive Bureau is composed of six members, one from each of the six world regions of the United Nations, one of whom is the President and the others are Vice-Presidents. Each country that is interested and committed to implementing this Programme must organise a National Commission or MaB Committee with an advisory, coordinating and action management character, which includes as members representatives of the organisations and institutions most closely related to the contents of the MAB Programme. For the implementation of its work in the field, the MAB Programme focuses its actions on the World Network of Biosphere Reserves, promoting the exchange of knowledge between reserves, research and monitoring, education, training and participatory decision-making. Geographic data are provided by the various competent administrations. The last declaration was for the Ribeira Sacra e Serras do Oribio e Courel Biosphere Reserve on 15 September 2021.
