Historical data on accidents in the Mediterranean Sea (since 1977) have been integrated into the Mediterranean Integrated Geographical Information System for Risk Assessment and Pollution Control (MEDGIS-MAR), managed by the Regional Marine Pollution Emergency Response Centre for the Mediterranean Sea (REMPEC). The information on each recorded event in the database includes the date and location of the spill or accident, the ship(s) or facility(ies) involved, the source of information, the type and quantity of pollutant, a brief description of the accident, and, when available, actions taken and consequences of the accident. Since the majority of these accidents do not cause sea pollution or present any risk of marine pollution, the listed accidents are those that have actually caused pollution in the Mediterranean Sea by hydrocarbons or other harmful and potentially dangerous substances (HPDS), or have had the potential to do so. The accidents included in the database meet at least one of the following criteria:
Accident occurring in the Mediterranean Sea as defined by the Barcelona Convention.
Accident involving any type of ship, which resulted in an actual spill of hydrocarbons, a spill or release of a harmful and potentially dangerous substance, or the loss or damage of a container holding one or more HPDS.
Land-based accidents (terminals, storage tanks, pipelines, industries, power plants, etc.) that led to the penetration of hydrocarbons or HPDS into the marine environment.
Accident involving one or more tankers or chemical tankers (loaded or not).
Certain types of accidents, such as collisions, groundings, or others causing serious damage to the ships involved, especially if these ships were transporting or could have transported significant quantities of bunker fuel.
All accidents involving the sinking of ships with any amount of hydrocarbons on board.
All accidents involving the sinking of ships carrying a cargo of HPDS.
